On the Use of an Aqueous Solution of Chlorine as a Deodorant

as a disinfectant in surgical cases, an apology is perhaps necessary : for is not the action of chlorine as a deodorizer, disinfectant, and antiseptic, well known ? But in the present day, with carbolic, boracic, and salicylic acids, thymol, &c. &c., at our disposal, we are apt to neglect old tried friends for the popular favourites. In sloughing and foul-smelling wounds an aqueous solution of chlorine is probably one of the most perfect deodorizers we possess. As an application also to indolent sores, it is very useful. It may be objected, that the preparation of a solution of chlorine gas necessitates the use of flasks, bent tubes and other apparatus which are not usually found in Indian dispensaries. For some time past in the Bhagulpore Sudder Dispensary we have employed an aqueous solution of chlorine, and it has been prepared as follows:?A one pound wide-mouthed quinine bottle provided with a stopper is half filled with cold water, and into it is lowered by a piece of thin string a small bottle containing 3 drachms of chlorate of potash in crystals, and 5 drachms of common strong hydrochloric acid. The mouth of the small bottle is kept above the level of the water, and the quinine bottle closely stoppered. Violent action com-
